Thanks to grant support from the ASPCA, we were able to provide an invaluable hands-on educational experience this past August 2015 for veterinary residents, fellows, students AND six local animal shelters all through one event! At our annual Shelter Medicine Intensive training event, vets and students divide up into groups and learn from skilled shelter veterinarians as they provide consultative services at local shelters. This intensive has grown every year and is an amazing experience for all involved; an experience we couldn’t have coordinated without the support of the ASPCA!
The Shelter Medicine Intensive was created as a pilot by Dr. Sandra Newbury to provide additional hands-on training in shelter medicine to veterinary students and interns, residents, and fellows from the University of Wisconsin and University of California Davis Shelter Medicine Programs. The course is a weeklong series beginning with didactic training and moving into on-site small group consultations at various shelters in Wisconsin. These consultations are lead by some of our nations most progressive and knowledgeable shelter veterinarians, including our very own Dr. Newbury, Dr. Aziz, and Dr. Broadhurst.
Not only does this event provide valuable guidance to local Wisconsin shelters to help increase their life-saving capacity, but is also allows for lifelong relationship to be formed amongst the current and future veterinary professionals in the animal sheltering field.
