The Maddie's Shelter Medicine Internship position is designed to provide the intern with a well-rounded experience in the practice of clinical shelter medicine and surgery. The intern will be expected to develop clinical and didactic teaching skills, and will gain experience in shelter animal research, presentations, and consultations. Interns are responsible for providing program and research support for the University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program at Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) in Madison, Wisconsin. The intern will also provide support to the Shelter Veterinarians at DCHS in the execution of their responsibilities and participate in various veterinary related activities (medicine and surgery) as directed. Species cared for include felines, canines, rabbits, and pocket pets/exotics, and occasional livestock, equine, and wildlife exposure is possible if interested. Clinical training will be supplemented with participation in the UW Shelter Medicine Program research projects, presentations, and shelter consultations. The intern's time will be equally shared between UW and DCHS responsibilities, although the bulk of the clinical time will be spent at Dane County Humane Society.
