Colophon

“Colophon” comes from the Greek word “κολοφων” or “kolophon,” which means “summit” or “finishing touch.” A colophon describes the details and methods behind a publication and can be found in the last few pages of books.

We thank our volunteer photographer, Beth Rodgers, for many of the adorable photos on our website. We also thank our many hardworking staff members who have shared their photos taken on the job.

Typography

Futura PT is a sans serif face based on geometrical shapes, representative of the aesthetics of the Bauhaus school of the 1920s-30s. Future PT was created by ParaType, established as a font department of ParaGraph International in 1989 in Moscow, Russia. ParaType pays particular attention to the screen quality of its fonts. Most ParaType fonts are hinted manually and many of them are even delta hinted.

Adelle is a slab serif typeface conceived specifically for intensive editorial use, mainly in newspapers and magazines. The unobtrusive appearance, excellent texture, and slightly dark color allow it to behave flawlessly in continuous text settings, even in the most demanding editorial applications. Its energetic character, inherent to slab serif fonts, becomes evident as the typeface is used for subheadings and headlines. TypeTogether created it; an independent type foundry led by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione in 2006.

Design and Development

Neoteric Design designed and developed this site in the spring of 2016, and a refresh in the summer of 2021. Neoteric builds smart, easy-to-use web applications, sites, and portals for businesses and institutions. The refresh was dedicated to improving accessibility, usability, security, and speed.

Technical

This site runs on a decoupled CMS architecture, featuring Hugo, Cloudinary, and Forestry, with Netlify as a CDN. The customized theme is built by Neoteric Design. The site library is built in React and is powered by a separate Rails web app that provides a content API to this site, and the sites of participating organizations.
